CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

EAMON

“We’ll pick this up later, then,” I say definitively, and the tension surrounding the table lessens sharply. Theo and I begin to gather up all the photos and put them in manila envelopes and then pack them into boxes. Glancing over at my sister, still sitting on the sofa with a disturbed expression, I fight a frown. She didn’t say much. Keeva just stares at some distant point on the floor. She’s as far from Audie as she can be in my flat. I clear my throat gruffly before looking at each person standing around the table. “I’ll be contacting each of you separately. Make sure you pick up when I call. Not one of you wants to be on my bad side.”

“Well, I’m on shift in about two hours. Anyone wanna go get an early dinner?” There’s a wave of grumbles in agreement, but I don’t catch who asked the question. My mind’s firmly on Audie as I catch her out of the corner of my eye. She’s pale, which only accentuates the bruises on her face and neck.

Fuck, it’s horrifying that a man did this to her at her own father’s order. Or rather, I doubt Murray told him to beat her. If he did . . . well, that’ll be another story. He likely told the arsehole to head over and make things right so he could proceed as planned. Even if Murray didn’t kill the McCarthys, I may just have to throttle his arse myself. If you ask me, he deserves it. For everything he’s done to Audie already and how he’s treated her. I hate how the day has gone, how she and I haven’t had a chance yet to talk about it.

Maybe it’s for the best. The huge amount of food Audie made is glistening, just beautiful. She sluggishly tosses a salad together in a bowl. Her movements are lackluster. Looking up as Theo ushers people out of the flat, I purse my lips thinly and shake my head when he glances back at me questioningly. Concern brightens his eyes, but he doesn’t protest as he leaves behind everyone else. He knows I need to be alone with her right now, but there’s still one more thing I have to do before Audie and I are alone. I highly doubt all these people around her made her feel better anyway.

Suddenly, it’s only Keeva, Audie and I. Indecision wars in my chest. Do I just kick my sister out to deal with her feelings in solitude? I can’t really do or say anything to help her. Looking over my shoulder at Audie, my heart aches intensely. The front door swings open again, and Theo grabs my sister by the hands to drag her out of her seat. She doesn’t protest, but she’s clearly too dazed to do more than stumble over her own feet. I nod at him appreciatively.

“Audie,” I break the silence as I turn to her, and she pauses while fluffing lettuce with two spoons.
